Lutheran Church in Australia & New Zealand (LCANZ) International Mission invited its partners to contribute to a devotional resource for use during Pentecost, centred on the theme of “Unity”. This theme is drawn from Acts 2, where the apostles are described as gathered together in one place.
This unity is not something the disciples achieved through their own effort or agreement, but something given and sustained by God. They are gathered because Christ has called them, and they remain together in trust and expectation of what God will do next. It is within this gathered community that the Holy Spirit is poured out.
Their prayer is that this devotional resource will help readers reflect on this gift of unity and encourage them to live within it, as people who are continually renewed and sent by the Spirit.
Bishop Anthony Loh’s devotion on Genesis 2:18 is on page 5: ‘Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” ‘ From the beginning, God places people in relationship. Community is not optional. It is part of God’s design.
